Calling all runners!  Mini Milers registration is open!

The Mini Milers program consists of a ten-week program that enables Vermont youth to learn and practice fitness, good nutrition, citizenship, helping hands and goal setting, all while having fun and being safe. Children meet weekly with Mini Milers leaders to get motivated, interact with others and work towards learning the education components of the program. With the help of their leader, each participant tracks their mileage, while earning incentives as they strive towards the goal of accumulating the distance of a marathon distance or beyond. In addition to mileage incentives, t-shirt, medal and finisher's certificate, participants receive monthly e-letters filled with ideas, citizen challenges and tasty recipes. The cost is $35 per participant and scholarships are available.  This program is open to all students in grades K-5.  The program will meet Thursdays, from 3:00-4:00, starting on April 6.  Snacks will be provided!  Registration forms are available from Mandi in Burlington Kids, or from Ms. Clopton or Ms. Rebekah.

February is Black History Month
Whereas Black History is American History and should be acknowledged not just in February alone, Black History Month is an opportunity to honor and highlight the contributions and legacies of Black and African American people throughout history. We strive for an inclusive approach and the day that we no longer need to remind ourselves to integrate the curriculum. Black History Month is also a time to be reflective about the affirmation of the voices that have traditionally been left out of our history.
Here is a great collection of resources including ready-to-use lesson plans and student activities. There are also collection guides and research aids to use with the many, many primary sources offered from the Library of Congress, National Archives, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art and National Park Service.

Girls on the Run
GIRLS ON THE RUN

Girls on the Run is returning to JJ Flynn and we need COACHES!

Over a period of 10 weeks, girls in the 3rd through 5th grade participate in an after-school program like no other. Designed to allow every girl to recognize her inner strength, the Girls on the Run curriculum inspires girls to define their lives on their own terms. Throughout the season, the girls make new friends, build their confidence and celebrate all that makes them unique.
The Girls on the Run lessons encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development. Participants explore and discuss their own beliefs around experiences and challenges girls face at this age. They also develop important strategies and skills to help them navigate life experiences. We start with helping the girls get a better understanding of who they are and what’s important to them. Then, we look at the importance of team work and healthy relationships. And, finally, the girls explore how they can positively connect with and shape the world.
Physical activity is woven into our program to inspire an appreciation of fitness and to build habits that lead to a lifetime of health. At the end of each ten week session, the girls participate in a Girls on the Run 5k event. This celebratory, non-competitive event is the culminating experience of the curriculum. Completing the 5k gives the girls a tangible understanding of the confidence that comes through accomplishment as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. Crossing the finish line is a defining moment when the girls realize that even the seemingly impossible IS possible.
GOTR is a spring program that starts at the end of March and runs through the first week of June.  Sessions meet twice a week for 90 minutes each.  You do not need to have running experience to coach!

Flynn Firefly Food Drive

During the upcoming season of giving, our wonderful Flynn School Community has decided to collect canned and boxed food for our local food shelf!  Our kind-hearted and respectful Flynn students need your help too.

Please help your children to remember to bring in canned and/or boxed food from Monday, November 28th - Monday, December 19th. Items will be collected in each classroom then gathered near the Kindergarten/multi-purpose room entrance so that everyone can see how very generous Flynn Fireflies are and how every little bit of giving helps others in our community.

The Flynn Staff feels very fortunate to be a part of our generous community.  In lieu of gifts to us, please consider donating to the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf on our behalf.

Sunflower Art
Kindergarten classes investigated sunflowers in art. They looked carefully at real sunflower parts and whole sunflowers. They even made playdough impressions of the texture of a sunflower head.  Children looked at sunflower paintings by Vincent Van Gogh, then painted petals and seeds to create beautiful flower heads.

Harvest Food Drive

Flynn School's Annual Harvest Food Drive is November 1-18. If you wish to donate canned goods or Hannaford gift cards, we are collecting contributions in our Main Office. All food collected will go to Flynn Families.  Please contact Liane Couture at 864-8445 if your family is in need of receiving food items this holiday season.

Superheroes Worthy of Recognition

Mandi Harris | Site Director, Flynn Elementary School, BurlingtonKids, Burlington, Vermont
Being a superhero in the field of afterschool means that you have to be strong with a variety of groups of people, not just the kids. When we read the submission about Mandi Harris, it was obvious that management, coworkers, and parents are big fans as well! Here's just a bit of what they had to say.

"The afterschool Site Director role is challenging and Mandi does it with commitment, grace and enthusiasm. It requires a great deal of balance between the relationship building and administrative management, which Mandi clearly recognizes. I have been tremendously impressed by Mandi's professionalism and skills that she displays with everyone she interacts with whether it is a challenging student, a family member, school staff, or one of her own staff members."—Christy Gallese, Director of Expanded Learning Opportunities

"Mandi is a great leader for the Flynn afterschool team. She has set expectations high for staff and supports them to meet and exceed those expectations. She holds herself to those same expectations and leads by example."—A staff member

"Mandi is awesome. She is always positive and shows caring and concern where it applies. I can't say enough how much my daughter cares for her!" —A parent

Nominated by: Christy Gallese, Director of Expanded Learning Opportunities for the Burlington School District
